Bird and squirrel damage can be a serious issue in many orchards and one very difficult to control. Black walnut trees have the highest concentration of juglone in their buds, nut hulls and roots but other trees related to the walnut (Juglandaceae family) produce some juglone as well. Air-blast orchard sprayers are most effective at managing insect and disease pressure and are available from various manufacturers in many different models and sizes. Low-volume lower pressure systems with microsprinklers are ideal (Figure 11). The pecan twig girdler is a large beetle with long antennae (Figure 23). Seedling pecan trees often produce small, thick-shelled nuts while trees grafted to improved cultivars produce large, thin-shelled nuts. Does the site frequently have frost in late spring or in early fall? It girdles twigs and small branches in September. Lack of adequate nutrient availability can also weaken the tree and predispose it to diseases and other disorders. Pecans are large trees that have significant nutrient requirements. The best management strategy for these insects is sanitation by removing and burying or burning these twigs as soon as they fall from the tree. The lower scaffolds should be selected from secondary buds that have a little more of an upright angle. The spots are between 2 to 5 mm wide and may appear whitish and “fuzzy” due to sporulation of the pathogen. Again, at 17 to 20 years after planting, the remaining temporary trees are removed.
